Rebecca Ackroyd
www.rebeccaackroyd.com"There has always been an ongoing dialogue between drawing and sculpture within my practice. I am interested in how an object can perform in multiple ways, exploring the possibility of sculptures that can operate across media processes, using materials to contrast and reflect the weight and density of an object.
I often play with quite formal compositions that reflect and re-appropriate everyday objects. The works have an apparent coldness or rigidity that I am currently trying to offset with a more playful undertone that runs through the pieces; draping fabrics and jewellery over hard surfaces veiling and revealing aspects of the works and giving them a more personal touch. This is also suggested through the titles I give the works such as ‘nape’ and ‘lick’, which evoke sensual experiences and allude to a possible interaction with the works.
I feel that the process of making is key to my practice, as it is vital to react to materials and objects, allowing a piece to emerge and evolve rather than predetermining an outcome. This enables me to develop a more fluid method of working that is constantly being informed by new media and is not restricted in any way. I am intrigued by how different elements of the work and specifically the materials can contradict one another, de-familiarising the everyday and using repetition and scale to create something more unexpected."
