Matthew Krishanu
www.matthewkrishanu.com'My subject matter is often autobiographical, drawing on memories and photographs – particularly of my childhood in Bangladesh. Rather than straight autobiography, I prefer to work with imagery that has open narratives.
I am increasingly working in mixed media – beginning a painting with watery acrylics, before building layers in thicker oils. Sometimes parts of the painting are only in acrylics (the sky in Bird), and other elements are painted in oil (the kite). I also tend to use paint in a more translucent manner when painting on gessoed board (Boy in Water), as opposed to primed canvas (Skeleton). This is explored in my subject matter – the elements earth, air, water, and the contrast between architecture and nature.'
Short listed for ‘Griffin Art Prize 2014’ in November 2014.
