Marisa J Futernick

The work of Marisa J. Futernick is consumed by an ongoing obsession with the past, specifically that of America in the 1950s and 1960s.

She is from the USA, but has lived in London for over a decade, so there is a certain amount of distance from both the time and the place that she is examining. She attempts to navigate her complex relationship with the failed promise of the American dream by intertwining the personal with the historical and fact with fiction. Although from the East Coast, much of her work uses Southern California as its subject matter – palm trees and swimming pools are recurring motifs. She employs a variety of media including drawing, screenprinting, photography and painting; with the combination of text and image a regular feature throughout her practice.

Exhibited at Griffin Gallery in Surfacing in October 2013.
