Christopher Kulendran Thomas
Christopher Kulendran Thomas is engaged in an ongoing project called When Platitudes Become Form.
Thomas acquires drawings, paintings and sculptures from Sri Lanka’s most prominent galleries by leading contemporary Sri Lankan artists and recalibrates them into intriguing mixed media pieces that adhere to Western, rather than Asian, notion of the contemporary. Thomas’ work is not only a comment on notions of art market internationalism and the definition of contemporary, modern, postmodern, historical, Western and Eastern, but fundamentally addresses how a burgeoning art market can be a response to and a symbol of political oppression, state sponsored exploitation and corporate globalization.
Exhibited at Griffin Gallery in Young Gods in January 2013.
