Jennifer Maidment

My work is simple. I am fascinated with the organic things in life, literally: people’s faces and bodies, trees and vast landscapes. I have spent a long time pondering the sublime and what nature means within contemporary culture. The idea of utopia has often cropped up in my work; which has always led to the paradoxical theory of dystopia. But, to put it plainly, in a world where there are a lot of people and a lot of problems and having grown up experiencing many of these myself; I like to create art that evokes beauty without cynicism. I think depicting hope for our environmental state of affairs or our relationship with nature, is as important as pointing out the negative effects human-kind has had on the environment.
