Residency: Griffin Art Prize

Zsofia Schweger

27 January – 17 August 2016

The Residency:

Zsofia Schweger is the winner of Griffin Art Prize 2015. Designed to have a meaningful impact on the career of one emerging artist, the Griffin Art Prize is an annual residency and exhibition award for UK based artists in painting and drawing. It provides the time, space, materials and support to develop work for a one-person exhibition. The Griffin Art Prize winner will have unique access to a large studio in London for six months. Materials of choice are provided by the world’s leading fine art brands, Winsor & Newton, Liquitex and Conté à Paris. The six month residency culminates in a solo exhibition at Griffin Gallery in summer 2016.

Zsofia Schweger:

Winner of Griffin Art Prize 2015.

"My work is driven by my experience as a Hungarian living abroad first in the USA and now in the UK: I research the notions of home and belonging, local identity, and the emigrant experience.

My personal narrative has engendered painterly thinking of absence and presence, stillness and duration, space and flatness, cosiness and dread.

I pair potentially pleasant interiors rendered in possibly seductive colours with a sure sense of alienation expressed by reductive, non-hierarchical paint application. My methodological approach to technique lets up, however, through touch: my hand trembles where colour-blocks meet, forming wavering white lines. I want always to make paintings that are affective and alive."

Exhibited at Griffin Gallery in BLOC solo show, August - September 2016 and Griffin Art Prize 2015, November 2015.
