Through a forthright approach to materials and the use of mixed media, my paintings inhabit a naturally strange and elusive world that questions ideas of visual perception, scale and existentialist thoughts regarding the potentiality of the atmosphere we inhabit. Near ritualistic notational drawing of the detritus left by the movement of the river tide near to my studio give my predilection for this kind of abject subject matter, and its relationship to the materiality of the image in my painting, a constant presence in my work. As I bring in to my work other areas of interest such as the work of Buster Keaton, Beckett and the more contemporary Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer my paintings are created with a mix of humour and reverence.
Metsoja exhibited at Griffin Gallery in the Griffin Art Prize 2015 shortlist exhibition, in November - December 2015.
