Surface Fine Art Exhibition

‘SURFACE’ opened to the public on 26th April and showcased a stunning collection of work produced by the Kensington and Chelsea College’s art alumni and their former tutors, who are also established, practicing artists.

The exhibition represented artists pushing against the boundaries of their practice, challenging people’s understanding of what paint should be and should do and explores the expressive potential in the artists’ chosen mediums.

The exhibition also highlighted a new and bourgeoning relationship between Winsor & Newton and Kensington and Chelsea College. It illustrated our desire to support, young and emerging artists with the creation and exhibition of their art through residencies, exhibition space and access to expertise on fine art materials.

Among the SURFACE alumni exhibitors are Susan Sluglett, who was recently selected for the prestigious Jerwood Painting Fellowship and Julie Bennett, referred to as ‘one of Saatchi’s new stars’ by The Independent and who has recently made a series of films on paintings for the BBC:

Julie Bennett: “I’m excited to be in this exhibition as it’s a celebration of paint and the joy of mark-making. It is a thrill to be exhibiting alongside ex-tutors from KCC who were always so encouraging and a source of inspiration through their dedication both to the students and to their practice.”

SURFACE exhibiting artists: Julie Bennett, Charlotte Betts, Keren Dee, Brian Deighton, Gill Ingham, Anita Kavaja, Matthew Kolakowski, Caroline List, Emanuelle de la Lubie, Brian Sayers, Susan Sluglett, Chris Wilson, Erika Winstone, Maria Zahle.
