Residency: Project Based

Janet Currier

30 October 2017 – 30 January 2018

The Residency:

Elephant magazine in collaboration with Griffin Gallery has offered an opportunity to a London based artist, graduated in 2017, to undertake a residency from November 2017 to January 2018.

Janet Currier is the artist selected by Elephant magazine for the three month Elephant Residency at Griffin Gallery. During her residency Janet Currier will be exploring the materiality of paint, the process of making and create a new body of work still firmly rooted in the domestic.

5 Questions with Janet Currier - Elephant

Janet Currier:

"For some time I have been making work about the anxieties, failures and messiness of being a mother. I use domestic pattern as a kind of stand in for the repetitive, boring, and loving gesture of maternal labour. For me, pattern is also a way to explore longstanding concerns around painting, for example, and the edge between abstraction and representation. Similarly, it is a means for rethinking the flat surface and re-examining the potential for creating a different narrative order in painting."
